The quickest answer to Agafay vs Merzouga is simple: book Agafay if you want a desert-style evening without leaving the Marrakech area; choose Merzouga if seeing and sleeping beside sweeping Sahara sand dunes is the reason for your trip. They are different landscapes, not two versions of the same excursion.
We run Merzouga Glamping beside Erg Chebbi, so we have a clear interest in Sahara stays. But a rushed journey is not a good holiday. This guide explains when the nearby Agafay experience is the better choice, what a Merzouga trip actually involves, and which questions to ask before paying. Affiliate tours below are offered by independent operators; booking one does not automatically book our camp.

Is Agafay the Sahara? The landscape difference
Agafay is a rocky desert landscape outside Marrakech, not the Sahara dune field that many visitors imagine. Its bare hills are striking at sunset and can give a beautiful backdrop for dinner or a night in a tent. If a listing shows enormous orange dunes, ask where those photographs were taken.
Merzouga sits beside Erg Chebbi in southeastern Morocco. Here the attraction is sand: changing dune ridges, footprints at sunrise and the warm colour of the late-afternoon light. If your dream photograph is a camel caravan crossing a sand dune, Merzouga is the more natural match. Neither landscape is better for everyone.

Choose Agafay for a short Marrakech stay
For a two- or three-night city break, Agafay lets you keep most of your time in Marrakech. A sunset outing can combine a transfer, a camel ride and dinner, depending on the exact product. An overnight stay offers a slower evening, but check whether your venue is an actual overnight camp or only a dinner site.
Compare the pickup area, actual time on site, group size and return time. A low headline price is less useful if transfers are extra or a long pickup circuit uses much of the afternoon. Ask about bathrooms, shade, heating or air conditioning rather than assuming that every luxury label includes them.
- Best fit: a short city break, limited driving time, or one free evening.
- Less suitable: travellers whose main goal is large Sahara sand dunes.
- Check before booking: hotel pickup, meal inclusions, drinks and whether the tent is private.

Choose Merzouga for dunes and an overnight Sahara trip
Merzouga needs more time, but the road journey is part of the experience: the High Atlas, kasbah country and the southeast on the way to Erg Chebbi. A typical three-day return tour spends the first night en route and the second in the desert, followed by a long return journey. A four-day plan can make room for a fuller desert day or more relaxed stops; read the actual itinerary because formats differ.
For a dune-focused stay, consider two nights near Merzouga. That gives you a full day for a 4x4 outing, camel ride, sandboarding or horse riding rather than arriving for one sunset and leaving immediately after breakfast. Weather can affect every activity, so no operator can promise a particular sunset or a clear sky.
- Best fit: travellers with at least three spare days and a strong interest in Sahara dunes.
- Less suitable: anyone trying to add a same-day return from Marrakech.
- Check before booking: Erg Chebbi location, desert night count, group size and the camp name.

Which costs less: Agafay or Merzouga?
Agafay usually costs less for the whole outing because you are buying fewer travel days, not because every camp is cheaper. A premium Agafay overnight can cost more than a basic shared Sahara tour. Compare a dinner trip with another dinner trip, and a private ensuite overnight with a similar standard of accommodation.
Tour prices change with date, vehicle type, room choice and group size. Use live listings for quotes rather than treating a fixed online price as a promise. The table below shows what to count so an attractive headline price does not hide the real total.
| Budget item | Agafay booking | Merzouga booking |
|---|---|---|
| Transport | Check round-trip Marrakech pickup | Count the full journey and any private transfer |
| Nights | Dinner-only or a paid overnight | En-route accommodation plus the camp nights |
| Meals | Check dinner, breakfast and drinks separately | Check which lunches, dinners and breakfasts are included |
| Activities | Check camel ride duration and optional extras | Check camel ride, 4x4 and other extras |
| Comfort | Private tent, bathroom, climate control | Same checks, including AC in summer and heating in winter |
Overnight comfort: check the tent, not just the label
A tent photograph cannot tell you whether the bathroom is shared, whether cooling runs all night or whether dinner is served in an enclosed restaurant. These details matter more than the word luxury, especially in the hottest months and on cold winter nights.
At Merzouga Glamping, stays start from €70 per person per night, with a single tent at €85. Private ensuite tents have AC and heating that run day and night, and dinner is served in our air-conditioned restaurant. Those are camp rates, not a Marrakech transport package. Ask us to confirm your dates and exact inclusions before comparing with an independent tour.

Ask about my camp stayBest time to visit Agafay and Merzouga
For Merzouga, October to April is generally the more comfortable window, with pleasant days and cold nights. Spring and autumn offer a good balance for time outdoors. In May to September, very hot daytime conditions make early starts, shade, water and reliable air conditioning especially important.
Agafay is convenient rather than immune to the weather: exposed rocky terrain can be hot in summer and evenings can be cold. Check the forecast for your date and the facilities at the exact venue. Clear skies are never guaranteed in either destination.
Can you visit both on one Morocco trip?
Yes, but give each a different role. With a week in Morocco, Agafay can be an optional evening near Marrakech before a multi-day crossing to Merzouga and Fes. If the schedule already feels full, skip the extra desert dinner and spend that time in Marrakech or add a second Sahara night.
With only one free day, choose Agafay. With three free days, a Merzouga return tour is possible but road-heavy. With four or more, prioritise a slower Sahara itinerary. If you can arrive in Marrakech and depart from Fes, a one-way desert crossing avoids repeating the road back to Marrakech.
Seven questions to ask before you book
- Is this Agafay rocky desert or Merzouga at Erg Chebbi? Ask for the exact location.
- What is the camp name, and do the photographs show that property?
- How many nights are actually spent in the desert rather than en route?
- Is the bathroom private, and are AC or heating available when needed?
- What is included: transfers, meals, drinks, camel ride and other activities?
- Is the vehicle shared or private, and what are the pickup and return arrangements?
- What are the deposit, cancellation and weather-related change conditions?
Our verdict: convenience or the Sahara dune experience?
Choose Agafay when your priority is an easy escape from Marrakech. Choose Merzouga when the dunes and a night beside the Sahara are worth several days of travel. You do not need to dismiss one destination to appreciate the other: the right choice is the one that matches your time, comfort needs and expectations.

Frequently asked questions
Is Agafay better than Merzouga?+
Agafay is better for a short escape from Marrakech; Merzouga is better if your priority is the large Sahara sand dunes at Erg Chebbi. Choose according to time and landscape rather than treating them as identical trips.
Does Agafay have sand dunes?+
Agafay is primarily a rocky desert of dry hills and stony terrain. It does not offer the large Erg Chebbi sand dunes found beside Merzouga.
How far is Agafay from Marrakech?+
Allow roughly 45–60 minutes each way from Marrakech, depending on your pickup point and exact venue. Confirm the transfer schedule with your operator.
Can I visit Merzouga as a day trip from Marrakech?+
A same-day return is not a sensible leisure plan. The drive takes roughly 9–11 hours each way before longer stops. Allow at least three days for a return road tour, or longer for a more relaxed trip.
Is Agafay cheaper than Merzouga?+
Usually for the total outing, because it needs less transport and fewer nights. But a luxury Agafay overnight can be more expensive than a basic shared Merzouga tour. Compare equal comfort levels and all inclusions.
Which desert is best for families?+
Agafay suits families who want a short transfer. Merzouga suits families comfortable with a longer route and breaks along the way. For either, confirm private bathrooms, appropriate activities and temperature control.
Can you sleep in the desert in both places?+
Yes, both areas offer overnight accommodation, but some Agafay listings are dinner-only. Confirm a private overnight tent, the bathroom arrangement, meals and cooling or heating before paying.
Do the tours on this page stay at Merzouga Glamping?+
Not necessarily. GetYourGuide tours are run by independent operators and may use other camps. Check the named property with the operator; contact Merzouga Glamping directly if you want to stay with us.
