Merzouga sits in the far south-east of Morocco, close to the Algerian border. Nothing gets you here quickly, and that is precisely why the dunes still feel like the edge of the world when you arrive.

Every way to get to Merzouga at a glance

Route map: Fes, Marrakech and Merzouga
The two classic approaches meet near Erfoud for the last stretch into the dunes. From Fes you cross the Middle Atlas from north to south; from Marrakech you cross the High Atlas and follow the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs east.
From Fes to Merzouga (≈ 470 km, 7–8 hours)
The most popular approach, and an easy single day. The road climbs through the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas, crosses the high plateau around Midelt, then drops into the Ziz Valley — a canyon of date palms that is worth the drive on its own.
Leave Fes by nine in the morning and you will reach camp comfortably before sunset, with time for coffee, lunch and a few photo stops.

From Marrakech to Merzouga (≈ 560 km, 9–10 hours)
A long day in one go, and a wonderful two days if you take your time. This is the classic Moroccan desert route: over the High Atlas, past the kasbahs of the south and through two great gorges.

From Ouarzazate, Errachidia and other cities
- Ouarzazate: ≈ 370 km, 5–6 hours via Skoura, the Dades Valley, Tinghir and Erfoud.
- Errachidia: ≈ 130 km, about 2 hours on a good road through Erfoud.
- Casablanca: fly to Errachidia, or drive 9–10 hours; most travellers break the trip in Fes or Marrakech.
- Chefchaouen and Tangier: plan two days, with a night in Fes on the way.
Getting to Merzouga by bus
Supratours, the coach company of the national railway (ONCF), runs all the way to Merzouga village. The overnight coach leaves Fes in the evening (around 20:30, from the Supratours terminal next to the train station) and arrives in Merzouga early the next morning. From Marrakech there is a daytime coach via Ouarzazate.
CTM services usually end in Erfoud or Rissani, about 35–50 km before the dunes, so you finish by grand taxi or with our pickup. Timetables change by season, so always check the operator's website before you travel.
- Book a few days ahead on supratours.ma, especially in spring and autumn.
- Fares are around 190–285 MAD per person from Fes.
- Bring a jumper: coach air conditioning is strong at night.

Flying: the nearest airport to Merzouga
Errachidia Moulay Ali Cherif airport (ERH) is about 130 km, two hours, from camp, with domestic flights from Casablanca. It is the fastest way in if you are short on time.
Fes (FEZ), Marrakech (RAK) and Ouarzazate (OZZ) are the main alternatives. Whichever airport you land at, we can arrange a driver to meet you at arrivals — just send us your flight number.
Private transfer: the easiest option
A private driver picks you up at your riad or the airport, stops wherever you like for photos, lunch or a walk, and drops you at the camp. For two or more people it is often better value than it first looks, and it turns the long drive into the first day of your trip.

- Roads are paved all the way to the camp parking; you do not need a 4x4.
- Fill up in Errachidia or Erfoud. Petrol stations get sparse after that.
- Expect police checkpoints. Slow down, keep your licence, passport and rental papers handy, and respect speed limits — radar checks are common.
- Avoid driving the mountain passes at night: livestock, unlit trucks and sharp bends.
- Carry some cash in dirhams for parking, motorway tolls and village shops.
- Download offline maps: mobile signal is patchy in the Atlas.
Arriving at the camp
You do not need a 4x4 and you do not need to ride a camel with your suitcase. The camp is reachable by normal car, and we send an exact map pin with your booking confirmation. If you would rather not drive the last stretch, park in the village and we will come and get you.
Try to arrive by mid-afternoon: there is time for a shower in your air-conditioned tent, a glass of mint tea, then the sunset camel ride into the dunes.
