Merzouga sits in the far south-east of Morocco, close to the Algerian border. Nothing gets you here quickly, and that is precisely why the dunes still feel like the edge of the world when you arrive.
From Fes
Roughly seven hours by road, and the most popular approach. The route runs through the cedar forests at Ifrane and Azrou, over the Middle Atlas, then down the Ziz Valley — a canyon of date palms that is worth the drive on its own.
Most travellers break the journey with lunch at Midelt or a stop above the Ziz gorges. Leave Fes by nine in the morning and you will reach camp comfortably before sunset.
From Marrakech
About nine hours direct, which is a long day. We usually suggest splitting it over two days via the Tizi n'Tichka pass, Aït Benhaddou, Ouarzazate and the Dades or Todra gorges. That is the classic Moroccan desert route, and rushing it is a waste.
If you must do it in one go, start very early and expect to arrive after dark. Tell us and we will keep dinner for you.
From Ouarzazate and the Draa Valley
Around five hours, through Skoura, the Dades Valley, Tinghir and Erfoud. This is the shortest of the classic approaches and the easiest to enjoy in a single day.
Flying
Errachidia (ERH) is the nearest airport, about two hours from camp, with domestic connections from Casablanca. Fes (FEZ) and Marrakech (RAK) are the main international gateways.
Whichever airport you land at, we can arrange a private transfer with a driver who knows the route. Send us your flight number and we will take care of the rest.
By bus
CTM and Supratours both run overnight services from Fes and Marrakech to Merzouga village. They are cheap, safe and slow. We will collect you from the bus stop if you tell us when you are arriving.
Arriving at the camp
You do not need a 4x4 and you do not need to ride a camel with your suitcase. The camp is reachable by normal car, and we will send you an exact map pin along with your booking confirmation. If you would rather not drive the last stretch, park in the village and we will come and get you.
