Erg Chebbi or Erg Chigaga: the short answer

Choose Erg Chebbi beside Merzouga for dramatic dunes with easier road access, a wider choice of camps and a natural onward route to Fes. Choose Erg Chigaga beyond M’Hamid for a more remote Sahara journey, provided you are comfortable with an off-road transfer and fewer nearby services. Both are real Sahara sand-dune destinations; neither is Agafay’s rocky desert.

We run Merzouga Glamping at Erg Chebbi, so this is not a neutral camp directory. Our aim is to help you choose honestly: Chigaga can be the better fit for travellers who value remoteness above convenience. Tours linked here are operated independently and do not automatically include a stay at our camp.

The dunes: height, scale and the experience on the ground

Erg Chebbi is known for tall, closely grouped dunes rising above the Merzouga plain. Their steep ridges make striking sunrise and sunset viewpoints without requiring a long expedition from the village area. Camps are spread around the dune margins: a remote-looking photograph does not mean every camp is far from the road.

Erg Chigaga, also written Erg Chegaga, covers a broader desert area reached beyond M’Hamid or on a guided route from Foum Zguid. The appeal is the approach through open, sparsely serviced terrain as much as the dunes themselves. Exact dune-height figures vary between sources and dune shapes change; the useful comparison is concentrated ridges versus a more remote, extensive landscape.

Remote does not automatically mean empty. Both destinations receive tours, especially at popular sunset spots and camps. Ask how close your tent is to neighbouring properties, whether the excursion is shared and where you will walk or ride.

Access: can you reach either desert in a normal car?

A normal car can reach Merzouga and the paved roads around Erg Chebbi. That does not mean you can drive over the dunes or straight to every tent. Some camps arrange a final 4x4 transfer; others have a suitable approach track. Contact the property for its current meeting point and do not follow a navigation shortcut into sand.

For Erg Chigaga, plan a guided 4x4 transfer beyond the end of the paved route at M’Hamid. Allow roughly 1.5–2 hours for the off-road leg, depending on the chosen camp, weather and stops. A rental SUV is not automatically a sand-capable vehicle, and ordinary rental agreements may exclude off-road driving.

Book the off-road arrangements before you leave town, carry water and avoid relying on a mobile signal throughout the route. After rain, heat or strong winds, your operator may need to change the approach. For a first desert visit, a local driver is a more sensible choice than attempting an unfamiliar piste alone.

From Marrakech or Fes: which route makes more sense?

From Marrakech, both deserts need a multi-day plan. Merzouga involves a long journey through the High Atlas and southeast; a direct drive is roughly 9–11 hours before extended sightseeing stops. Chigaga routes head through the Drâa Valley towards M’Hamid or Foum Zguid and add an off-road leg. Compare the actual daily itinerary rather than assuming one destination saves a whole day.

Three-day return tours exist for both destinations but can be road-heavy. Four days usually leave more breathing room, although not every four-day product includes an extra desert night. Look for the number of camp nights and hours on the road, not just the headline duration.

If you arrive in Marrakech and leave Morocco from Fes, Erg Chebbi is the more natural desert crossing. From Fes, Merzouga is also generally the more practical choice. Chigaga fits better into a southern Morocco loop including the Drâa Valley; visiting both ergs is possible but usually makes more sense on a longer trip.

Comfort: bathrooms, AC, heating and meals

Both areas offer simple and higher-comfort camps. A luxury label does not guarantee private bathrooms, reliable air conditioning, all-night power or an enclosed dining room. In a remote location, water and electricity arrangements deserve specific questions, especially if you are travelling in summer or with children.

Erg Chebbi has the advantage of more nearby village services and a wide accommodation choice. Erg Chigaga can still offer comfortable tents, but you should confirm the exact camp facilities rather than assuming remoteness means either basic camping or five-star comfort.

At Merzouga Glamping, stays start from €70 per person per night, with a single tent at €85. Our private ensuite tents have AC and heating running day and night, and dinner is served in our air-conditioned restaurant. These are camp-stay rates, not a Marrakech transport package. Ask for availability and exact inclusions for your dates.

Costs: compare the whole trip, not only the tent

Erg Chebbi is often easier to compare on a budget because there are many shared Marrakech tours and accommodation options. Erg Chigaga can involve a higher transport commitment when you need a private 4x4, but a shared departure or a simple camp may change the comparison. Neither desert is always cheaper.

Get a dated quote with the same party size, nights and comfort level. A low-price three-day tour with shared bathrooms is not equivalent to a private journey with an ensuite tent. Live affiliate prices depend on the travel date and selected option; do not treat a displayed starting price as a guaranteed final total.

Compare tours advertised for Erg Chigaga

The selected listings name Erg Chigaga or Erg Chegaga. However, their itineraries also mention Zagora or Tinfou. Before paying, get written confirmation of the actual Chigaga visit, the off-road transfer and the overnight camp location. A tour that only stays at Zagora or Tinfou is not the same experience.

Do not choose solely from a camel photo: request the exact dune destination and camp coordinates. If the operator cannot clearly confirm Chigaga, choose another product or book directly with a specialist.

Best time to visit: spring, autumn and the heat question

Spring and autumn generally offer a good balance for outdoor time in both deserts. October to April is often more comfortable than summer, but winter nights can be very cold. Pack layers and ask whether heating is included.

May to September can bring very hot daytime conditions. Reliable AC, shade, water and early or late excursions matter more than a desert’s reputation. Remote transfers can feel especially demanding in heat. Our Merzouga AC runs all day, but this is not a reason to plan strenuous activity at midday. Dust, wind and cloud can affect either destination; clear-sky stargazing is never guaranteed.

Which desert suits families, couples and first-time visitors?

  • First Sahara visit: Erg Chebbi is the simpler choice if you want dunes with easier access and more services.
  • Families or travellers sensitive to bumpy rides: compare road days carefully; Chigaga adds a significant off-road leg.
  • Couples seeking privacy: ask either camp about tent spacing and nearby camps, not just a honeymoon label.
  • Travellers prioritising remoteness: Chigaga offers a stronger off-road journey when you have enough time.
  • Comfort-focused summer stays: choose the confirmed cooling and power arrangement, not the desert name.
  • Marrakech-to-Fes itinerary: choose Erg Chebbi to keep the Sahara stop aligned with the crossing.

Before booking: six questions that prevent surprises

  • Which erg do we actually visit: Chebbi or Chigaga? Ask for the camp name and location.
  • How many nights are at the dunes, and how many are elsewhere?
  • Is the final transfer included, and is it in a suitable guided 4x4?
  • Are the bathroom, AC or heating private and available throughout the night?
  • What is the full price for our dates, including transport, meals and extras?
  • What happens if weather changes the route, and which cancellation policy applies?

Our verdict: convenience at Chebbi, remoteness at Chigaga

Choose Erg Chebbi if you want iconic Sahara dunes with practical access, a broader comfort choice and an easy fit into a Marrakech–Fes itinerary. Choose Erg Chigaga if the off-road approach and remoteness are central to the holiday, and you have confirmed the logistics. The best desert is the one that matches your time, expectations and actual booked camp—not the most dramatic listing photograph.

Frequently asked questions

Is Erg Chigaga better than Erg Chebbi?+

Erg Chigaga suits travellers who prioritise a remote off-road journey. Erg Chebbi suits visitors wanting easier access, a wide choice of camps and a practical Marrakech–Fes route. Neither is better for everyone.

Are Erg Chebbi and Merzouga the same place?+

Merzouga is the village beside the Erg Chebbi dune field. A Merzouga desert tour usually means a visit to Erg Chebbi, but confirm the exact camp location.

Can you drive a normal car to Erg Chigaga?+

You can reach M’Hamid on paved roads, but the onward journey to Erg Chigaga needs an arranged off-road transfer in a suitable 4x4 with a local guide. Do not attempt it in an ordinary rental car.

Which desert is cheaper to visit?+

Erg Chebbi often has more shared-tour options. Erg Chigaga may add private 4x4 costs, but accommodation and group size can reverse the comparison. Compare complete dated quotes with equal inclusions.

How many days do I need from Marrakech?+

Allow at least three days for a return road tour to either erg; four or more can reduce the rush. Check the actual itinerary and desert night count, since a longer tour does not always mean more time at the dunes.

Is Zagora the same as Erg Chigaga?+

No. Zagora is a separate town on the southern route. Tinfou and Zagora camp trips should not be assumed to visit Erg Chigaga. Ask for written confirmation of the erg and camp location.

Do luxury Sahara camps always have AC?+

No. Confirm cooling, heating, bathroom and power arrangements with the named property. Merzouga Glamping has private ensuite tents with AC and heating running day and night.

Do these affiliate tours include Merzouga Glamping?+

Not automatically. Independent tour operators may use other camps. Confirm the property before booking, or contact Merzouga Glamping directly for a stay with us.
