Yes — you can reach Merzouga Glamping in a normal car, without renting a 4x4. Our camp is at Rass Rmel, on the western edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes. We send the exact arrival pin with your booking confirmation, so you can follow the approach intended for guests rather than a map shortcut across the sand.

The important distinction is between driving to Merzouga, reaching a particular camp and driving into the dunes. These are three different journeys. Some camps require a transfer; others can be approached by ordinary car. This guide covers our arrival arrangements and the questions to ask any camp before booking.

Do you need a 4x4 to reach Merzouga?

A normal roadworthy car is suitable for the main-road journey to Merzouga. The usual approaches from Marrakech, Fes and Errachidia use paved roads. A larger vehicle may offer more luggage space, but buying a 4x4 rental package simply because your destination is the Sahara is not necessary.

Roadworks, weather and the final approach can change the practical route. Confirm current directions with your accommodation, especially after rain or strong winds. Normal-car access does not mean every track on your map is suitable, or that every camp in Erg Chebbi has the same access.

The last kilometres: follow the right camp access

Once you are near Merzouga, stop somewhere safe and check the arrival instructions we have sent. A map pin identifies a place; it does not guarantee that the shortest route to that place is drivable. Do not improvise a shortcut across open sand, even if you can see the tents ahead.

If navigation disagrees with the camp’s instructions, message or call us before continuing. Tell us your nearest landmark and whether you are in a compact rental car, a larger vehicle or arriving with a driver. That is more useful than trying a doubtful track and asking for help after getting stuck.

Parking: what to check before you leave your car

At Merzouga Glamping, you can drive up to the camp, or we can collect you from the parking area. Confirm which arrangement you will use before arrival. For any camp, ask where the car will remain, how you reach your tent and how the return journey works the following morning.

Do not assume that parking is guarded, covered, free or insured unless the camp confirms it. Remove visible valuables, lock the car and keep your keys unless a clearly explained arrangement requires otherwise. If a transfer is involved, agree the pickup time before dinner rather than at the last minute.

  • Ask for the parking location, not only the tent location.
  • Confirm any parking or transfer charge in writing.
  • Check the return time if you have a long drive the next day.

Luggage and camel rides: you do not have to ride in

The camel ride at our camp is an experience, not a compulsory way to transport you or your suitcase. You can arrive by car and enjoy the ride separately. This matters for families with children, guests who prefer not to ride and anyone carrying larger bags.

If you choose a parking-area pickup, tell us how many bags you have and whether you need help carrying them. Pack water, medication, documents and a phone charger somewhere easy to reach. Do not assume that all camps handle large suitcases in the same way.

Coming from Marrakech, Fes or Errachidia

For the longer approach from Marrakech, a stop on the way gives you more margin to arrive in daylight. From any starting point, refuel before the final approach, save the directions offline and avoid scheduling a tight onward connection immediately after your desert night.

Starting pointJourney planningArrival priority
MarrakechA long drive via the High Atlas; consider an overnight stopAvoid rushing the final stretch after dark
FesAllow time for stops through the Middle Atlas and Ziz ValleySend your estimated arrival time before the last leg
ErrachidiaA shorter road approach; confirm airport pickup if neededAgree the meeting point and any transfer price

Plan for breaks, roadworks and weather rather than treating a navigation time as a promise.

Your arrival checklist

  1. 1

    Before departure

Confirm your booking, arrival pin, vehicle type and expected arrival time. Ask about parking and any pickup charges.

  2. 2

    Before the final approach

Refuel, save directions and contact the camp if weather or road conditions have changed.

  3. 3

    If the track looks wrong

Stop safely. Do not test loose sand. Share your location and ask for the intended access.

  4. 4

    Before leaving the next morning

Check your onward route and agree your return pickup in advance if you parked elsewhere.

Arrive by car, stay beside the dunes

Easy access does not mean giving up the desert setting. At Merzouga Glamping, your private tent has an ensuite bathroom, AC and heating, with air conditioning running all day and all night. Dinner is served in our air-conditioned restaurant; the dunes and camel experience are part of the stay, not an obstacle to arrival.

Send us your dates, vehicle type and starting point. We will confirm the arrival instructions and help you plan the last part of the journey.

Frequently asked questions

Can I reach Merzouga Glamping in a small rental car?+

Yes. Our camp is reachable by normal car, without a 4x4. Follow the exact arrival instructions sent with your booking and check current conditions before the final approach.

Are all Merzouga camps accessible by normal car?+

No. Access depends on the camp’s position and approach. Some arrange a meeting point and transfer. Confirm the arrangements for your specific accommodation.

Is a camel ride compulsory to reach the tent?+

Not at Merzouga Glamping. You can arrive by car or arrange pickup from the parking area. The camel ride is a separate experience.

Can I drive my rental car onto the dunes?+

Do not take an ordinary rental car onto loose sand or dune slopes. Check the rental contract before leaving paved roads; off-road use may be excluded.

Is parking free and guarded?+

Ask the camp to confirm the parking location, any charges and supervision before arrival. Do not assume that free, guarded or covered parking is included.

Can I bring a large suitcase?+

Tell us your luggage needs when confirming your arrival. If you use a parking-area pickup, agree how the bags will travel rather than assuming they must go on a camel.

What if I arrive after dark?+

Contact us before the final approach and share your estimated arrival time. Avoid unfamiliar tracks and confirm how arrival affects any planned sunset activity.

Where do I get the exact camp arrival pin?+

We send the exact arrival pin with your booking confirmation. If anything is unclear, message us before departure and follow the approach we confirm for your vehicle.
