A private desert tour is worth paying more for when you need control over stops, travel with children or want to agree a particular camp. A shared tour is usually better for a solo traveller or a couple prioritising price. Neither option makes the road shorter: you still cross the High Atlas and spend long stretches in a vehicle.

This comparison focuses on multi-day tours from Marrakech to Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes, not Agafay or Zagora. We run a camp in Merzouga, so we also explain what to check about your overnight stay. The tours linked below are sold by independent operators, not by our camp.

Private vs shared: the differences that matter

Price basisUsually per personMay be per person or per vehicle

These are typical differences, not guarantees. The exact option and operator’s written terms decide what you receive.

What a shared tour actually feels like

You buy a seat on a departure with other travellers. Pickup may involve several hotels or a central meeting point, and photo, lunch and comfort stops follow the group schedule. The vehicle might be a minivan, minibus or coach: do not assume that “small group” means a particular number of seats.

The upside is a lower entry price and easy company, especially if you travel alone. The compromise is less control: you cannot normally add a long photography stop or change the overnight camp after joining. A well-organised shared tour can still be comfortable; read recent reviews about transport and punctuality, not only the camel ride.

What the private upgrade buys you

A genuinely private departure reserves the vehicle and driver for your party. That can mean easier toilet breaks, less waiting at pickups and a route shaped around your priorities. It does not mean unlimited detours: driving hours, accommodation bookings and daylight still constrain the plan. Agree the important changes in writing before paying.

  • Ask whether transport is exclusive on every day, including the return journey.
  • Confirm vehicle type, working air conditioning, seat belts and luggage capacity.
  • A driver is not automatically a licensed guide at every monument; check guided visits separately.
  • Private transport can still use a camp shared with other guests.

The long road does not change

Both formats usually cross Tizi n’Tichka, continue towards Ouarzazate and the valleys, then reach Merzouga. A three-day return itinerary concentrates many driving hours into a short break. A four-day itinerary can spread them out, but only if the extra day changes the route meaningfully. Compare the overnight stops, not just the advertised day count.

Compare the total bill, not the headline price

Use quotes for the same dates, duration, destination and room standard. Shared tours are commonly priced per person; private offers may also be per person, even when the vehicle is exclusive. Enter your full party size before comparing. A larger group can narrow the per-person gap, but private is not automatically cheaper for families.

Four adults, three days€180 × 4 = €720€1,000 for the party
Per adult before extras€180€250
Difference per adult—€70 for this example

Hypothetical arithmetic, not current market prices or our rates. Replace these figures with live quotes and add the same extras to both.

  • Add lunches, drinks, entrance fees, optional local guides and any camp upgrade.
  • Check single-room supplements, child pricing and whether dinner and breakfast are included each night.
  • Compare cancellation deadlines and deposits before comparing discounts.

Private tour does not mean luxury tent

Treat transport and accommodation as two separate purchases within the package. “Luxury camp” is not a consistent specification across listings. Ask for the camp’s name, the selected tent category, a private ensuite bathroom, and whether AC and heating are in the tent itself. A fan or an air-conditioned restaurant is not the same thing.

At Merzouga Glamping our private tents have AC and heating and ensuite bathrooms. Booking an affiliate tour does not mean you will stay with us. If you want our camp, ask us about availability first and have the tour operator confirm the arrangement explicitly; do not assume it is included.

Eight questions to ask before you book

  • Does this exact option visit Merzouga and Erg Chebbi, rather than Zagora?
  • Is the vehicle exclusive, or am I buying seats on a shared departure?
  • What is the maximum group size and the vehicle type?
  • Which camp and tent category are included in this option?
  • Which meals, entrances and local guides cost extra?
  • Are camel rides optional, and is a 4x4 alternative available?
  • Where is pickup, and does the trip return to Marrakech or finish in Fes?
  • What are the cancellation deadline and the policy for itinerary changes?

Our verdict: pay for the difference you will use

Choose shared if the itinerary suits you and the accommodation meets your needs: spending more just for the word “private” is not essential to enjoy the Sahara. Choose private if flexibility will genuinely improve your trip, then confirm the details that make that flexibility real. In either case, protect time in Merzouga rather than squeezing the dunes into an exhausting schedule.

Frequently asked questions

Is a private Marrakech desert tour worth it?+

Yes if you will use the extra flexibility, need frequent breaks or want an agreed camp and itinerary. If price is the main concern and the fixed schedule suits you, a shared tour can be the better choice.

Does a shared tour mean a shared tent?+

Not necessarily. Shared refers to transport or departure format. Check whether your booking gives your party a private tent and whether the bathroom is ensuite.

Does a private tour include AC in the tent?+

Only if the selected accommodation explicitly includes it. Private transport and tent amenities are separate details; ask for confirmation of AC, heating and the bathroom.

Which format is best for families?+

Private often gives families more control over breaks and pickup. Confirm child seats, room arrangements, meal requirements and the itinerary before booking either format.

Can a private tour finish in Fes?+

Some operators offer a Marrakech–Merzouga–Fes route. Book an option that explicitly ends in Fes; do not assume a round-trip listing can be changed without a new quote.

Are meals and entry tickets included?+

It varies by option. Read the inclusions and exclusions for every overnight stop, and budget separately for anything not listed, including lunches and monument tickets.

Can I skip the camel ride?+

Ask the operator before booking whether a 4x4 camp transfer is available and whether it costs extra. This is especially important if riding is unsuitable for you.

Will these tours stay at Merzouga Glamping?+

Not automatically. Affiliate tours are operated independently and include their own accommodation. Contact us for availability and have the operator confirm our camp by name before booking if that is your preference.
