The dunes are only part of Merzouga. A 4x4 day takes you into the country around Erg Chebbi — villages, black desert, oases and the people who live out here year-round.

Where you go
A typical route takes in Khamlia, where the Gnawa community plays music descended from sub-Saharan Africa, the fossil beds, the abandoned kohl mines at Mfis, a nomad family's tent for tea, and the dry lake of Dayet Srji where flamingos appear after rain.
Full-day tours add the black desert and a longer lunch stop. Your driver is from Merzouga and adapts the route to what interests you.
