About 8 hours on the road. You cross the High Atlas at 2,260 m, visit the UNESCO kasbah of Aït Benhaddou and sleep in a guesthouse in the Dadès Valley.

  2. 2

Day 2: Dadès → Todra Gorge → Merzouga

About 6 hours. A short walk in the Todra Gorge, then on to Merzouga for a sunset camel ride and your night in a desert camp.

  3. 3

    Day 3: Merzouga → Marrakech

Sunrise on the dunes, then the long drive back: 9 to 10 hours, often arriving in Marrakech after dark.

Pros and cons of 3 days

  • Pro: cheaper and fits a short holiday.
  • Pro: you still see the highlights and sleep in the dunes.
  • Con: only about 15 hours in Merzouga, most of them at night.
  • Con: the return day is exhausting and leaves no time for stops.
  • Con: little time to enjoy activities like 4x4, sandboarding or horse riding.

The 4-day itinerary, day by day

  1. 1

Day 1: Marrakech → Aït Benhaddou → Ouarzazate or Skoura

About 5 hours. A relaxed crossing of the Atlas with time to explore Aït Benhaddou, then a night among the palm groves of Skoura.

  2. 2

Day 2: Skoura → Valley of Roses → Dadès Gorges

About 3 hours. Kasbahs, rose gardens and the famous zigzag road of the Dadès Gorges.

  3. 3

Day 3: Dadès → Todra Gorge → Merzouga

About 5 hours, arriving in time for a sunset camel ride, dinner and a night under the stars.

  4. 4

    Day 4: Merzouga → Marrakech

Sunrise on the dunes. Some tours add a second desert night and return on day 5; otherwise it is the long drive back.

  • Con: the return to Marrakech is still a long day.

Which one should you choose?

You are…Our advice
Travelling with children4 days: shorter drives, fewer meltdowns
A couple on a honeymoon4 days, ideally with 2 nights in the dunes
Short on time (one week in Morocco)3 days is fine
Prone to car sickness4 days: the Atlas road has many bends
A photographer4 days: you need golden hours at the stops
Ending your trip in Fes3 days one-way (Marrakech → Merzouga → Fes)

Aït Benhaddou, a stop on every Marrakech desert tour.

Season matters too

In winter the days are short: on a 3-day tour you may cross the Atlas in the dark and arrive at the camp too late for sunset. In summer the midday heat makes long drives tiring. In both seasons, the 4-day rhythm is noticeably more comfortable.
