A two-day Fes–Merzouga trip can work if you want one night at Erg Chebbi and are comfortable with long road days. A three-day option often changes the journey rather than simply adding a relaxed day: many listings continue west from Merzouga and finish in Marrakech.

That distinction matters when comparing prices, hotel nights and return transport. Below, we separate the two common formats, explain what the road days feel like, and point to listings whose published itineraries match the route described.

How long is the drive from Fes to Merzouga?

Plan for roughly 7–8 hours of driving from Fes to Merzouga in ordinary conditions, around 470 km by the usual road via Ifrane, the Middle Atlas, Midelt and the Ziz Valley. A tour day takes longer once meals, photo stops, weather and traffic are included. The return is another substantial drive.

The route is scenic but not a quick transfer. The road climbs through the Middle Atlas, passes cedar country around Azrou and Ifrane, crosses high open plateaus near Midelt, then descends into the palm-filled Ziz Valley before Erfoud and Merzouga. Ask how many stops are planned and whether the vehicle has seat belts for every passenger.

What a 2-day Fes–Merzouga return usually includes

  1. 1

Day 1 · Fes to Erg Chebbi

An early departure heads through Ifrane and Midelt, with breaks along the way. After reaching Merzouga, the package may include a 4x4 or camel transfer, sunset, dinner and a night at the camp. Confirm which transfer and tent option your selected price covers.

  2. 2

Day 2 · Sunrise and return to Fes

A sunrise over the dunes is often followed by breakfast and the long drive north. Expect a full travel day; the exact Fes arrival time depends on stops and road conditions. Avoid scheduling a tight onward connection that evening.

What changes on a 3-day Fes desert tour?

Many three-day listings are one-way Fes-to-Marrakech crossings. They reach Merzouga on the first day, include a desert-camp night, then continue west through the Todra area and southern Morocco. A second night is commonly spent in a hotel or guesthouse en route, before the final drive to Marrakech.

This is a useful way to connect two cities without returning to Fes, but it is not normally a leisurely three-day Merzouga stay. Check whether the Marrakech drop-off is included, what happens to your luggage during the camp transfer, and whether the second night is a hotel, guesthouse or another camp.

Camp comfort: check the exact tent and bathroom

“Luxury” can mean different things from one operator to another. Before paying, check whether your selected option includes a private tent, an ensuite bathroom, hot water, bedding, dinner and breakfast. Ask whether transfers to the camp are by camel or 4x4 and whether there is an extra charge for either.

For the three-day crossing, also check the en-route hotel: a more comfortable desert camp does not automatically upgrade the second night. Read the cancellation policy and confirm the final price for your dates and party size.

If you prefer to book the camp separately, Merzouga Glamping has private ensuite tents with AC and heating running day and night, plus dinner in an air-conditioned restaurant. Direct stays start from €70 per person per night; a single tent is €85. Transport is separate.

Costs: compare what is included, not just the headline price

A two-day return and a three-day one-way crossing are different products, so a cheaper headline does not automatically mean better value. The three-day route covers more ground and often includes another accommodation night, while the two-day format returns to Fes after a single camp night.

Use the live price for your dates, group size and exact tent option. Compare pickup, road transport, meals, camp transfers, private bathrooms, the second hotel night and the final drop-off. Check whether lunches, drinks, local fees and optional activities are extra. We avoid quoting package prices that can change by season or operator.

Which option should you choose?

  • Choose 2 days if you must return to Fes, want one night at Erg Chebbi and can manage two long drives.
  • Choose 3 days if you want to continue to Marrakech and prefer the Sahara crossing to be part of the route between cities.
  • Choose neither on a tight schedule if a late Fes arrival or same-evening flight would cause stress.
  • Add a night in Merzouga if you want more time for sunrise, rest and the dunes rather than another long road stage.
