Luxury desert camp can mean almost anything in Morocco, from a mattress on the floor of a shared tent to something considerably better than a hotel. Here is exactly how a night with us runs, so you know what you are choosing.
Late afternoon — arrival
You arrive by car, or we collect you. Someone takes your bag, and within a minute or two there is mint tea and a place to sit in the shade. We show you to your tent: a real bed, a private bathroom with a hot shower, air conditioning or heating depending on the season, and power sockets that fit your charger.
Most guests then walk straight out onto the dune behind the camp, which is the correct instinct.
An hour before sunset — the camels
The caravan leaves in the late afternoon. It is a slow, quiet ride into the high dunes, with a stop on a ridge where everyone gets down, walks barefoot on the sand and watches the light go. You come back to camp in the blue half-hour afterwards.
Evening — dinner
Dinner is Moroccan home cooking, made by our family: soup, salads, a tagine or couscous, bread, fruit and tea. It is served in our air-conditioned restaurant. If you are vegetarian, vegan, coeliac or allergic to something, tell us beforehand and it is simply handled.
After dinner — fire and music
Drums come out. Our team plays traditional Berber music around the fire, guests join in badly and enthusiastically, and it lasts as long as people want it to. Nobody is made to participate.
Then the lanterns go down for stargazing, and the camp goes very quiet.
Dawn — the part nobody regrets
Set an alarm. The walk up the nearest dune takes about ten minutes and the sunrise over Erg Chebbi is, for most guests, the single best hour of their time in Morocco. Breakfast is waiting when you come down: bread, honey, amlou, eggs, fruit and coffee.
Then, if you have a second night, the whole day is yours — sandboarding, a quad tour, a 4x4 into the villages, or nothing at all.
