Casablanca is Morocco’s main international airport, so many travellers start here and ask the same question: can I reach the Sahara from Casablanca, and is it worth the drive? The short answer is yes, if you have at least four days and accept long road time. Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes sit roughly 560–600 km from Casablanca, on the far side of the Atlas Mountains.

This guide compares the realistic 4-day and 5-day routes, shows real driving times for each day, explains the costs and the flight alternative, and lists GetYourGuide tours whose itineraries start in Casablanca and actually reach Merzouga.

Is a desert tour from Casablanca worth it?

It is worth it if the Sahara is a priority and Casablanca is your arrival or departure point. A one-way tour that starts in Casablanca and ends in Marrakech avoids backtracking and covers Fes, the Middle Atlas, Merzouga, the gorges and Aït Benhaddou in one trip.

It is less worth it if you only have three days, or if you must return to Casablanca. A round trip spends about 18 hours on the road just to reach the dunes and come back. In that case, flying to Errachidia or choosing a shorter desert closer to Marrakech can make more sense.

Realistic driving times from Casablanca

LegDistance (approx.)Driving time
Casablanca → Fes300 km3–3.5 h on the motorway
Fes → Ifrane → Midelt → Merzouga470 km7–8 h
Casablanca → Merzouga direct (via Meknes, Midelt)560–600 km8–9 h
Merzouga → Todra → Dadès300 km4.5–5 h
Dadès → Aït Benhaddou → Marrakech320 km5.5–6.5 h
Marrakech → Casablanca240 km2.5–3 h on the motorway

Driving times exclude photo stops, lunch and visits. Mountain passes, snow in winter and roadworks can add time.

The 4-day route: fast but intense

Most 4-day tours from Casablanca follow one of two patterns. The first goes Casablanca → Fes on day one, Fes → Merzouga on day two, Merzouga → Dadès on day three and Dadès → Marrakech on day four. The second does a loop with two nights in the desert and returns to Casablanca.

Both are possible, but you will spend roughly 20–24 hours in the vehicle over four days. There is little time to explore Fes, and the day into the desert is long. Four days suits travellers who mainly want one night in the dunes and are comfortable with long drives.

  1. 1

    Day 1: Casablanca → Fes

Motorway drive, sometimes with a stop in Rabat; evening in Fes.

  2. 2

    Day 2: Fes → Merzouga

Ifrane, the cedar forest near Azrou, Midelt and the Ziz Valley; camel ride and camp night.

  3. 3

    Day 3: Merzouga → Dadès

Sunrise on the dunes, then Todra Gorge and a night in the Dadès Valley.

  4. 4

    Day 4: Dadès → Marrakech

Ouarzazate, Aït Benhaddou and the Tizi n’Tichka pass, arriving in Marrakech in the evening.

The 5-day route: the better balance

A fifth day changes the trip. You can either add a full day in Fes or a second night in Merzouga, where you can sleep in, explore the dunes by 4x4, ride a camel at sunset or try sandboarding. The driving days stay the same, but you get a real rest between them.

For most travellers starting in Casablanca, five days is the length we recommend. It turns the tour from a long transfer into a trip you can enjoy, and it leaves room for weather or a late start.

Back to Casablanca or on to Marrakech?

If your flight leaves from Casablanca, a one-way tour that ends in Marrakech is still often the best choice. The motorway or the train from Marrakech to Casablanca takes about 2.5–3 hours, so you can return the next day without repeating the desert road.

Round-trip tours that return directly from Merzouga to Casablanca mean a final day of 8–9 hours’ driving. Do not book a flight on the same evening.

The faster alternative: fly to Errachidia

Royal Air Maroc runs flights from Casablanca to Errachidia, the nearest airport to Merzouga. The flight takes about 1 hour 15 minutes, and the road from Errachidia to Merzouga is roughly 130 km, or about 2 hours. Flights do not operate every day, so check the schedule for your dates.

Flying saves two long driving days and works well if you want two or three nights in the desert. Arrange a transfer in advance, then return by air or continue overland to Fes or Marrakech.

Tips before you book

  • Confirm that the itinerary names Merzouga or Erg Chebbi, not Zagora.
  • Ask whether the tour ends in Marrakech, Fes or Casablanca, and at which address.
  • Leave a buffer night before an international flight.
  • In winter, bring warm layers for the Middle and High Atlas passes and desert nights.
  • Pack a small overnight bag for the camp; large suitcases usually stay in the vehicle.
