Almost every traveller planning a Moroccan desert trip faces this question: Merzouga or Zagora? Tour companies sell both as 'the Sahara', often for similar prices, and the brochures look alike. We live in Merzouga and we are biased — but we also meet guests every week who have done both, and this is the comparison we give them honestly.
The dunes themselves
This is the decisive difference. Erg Chebbi at Merzouga is a true sand sea: dunes up to 150 metres high, stretching roughly 28 kilometres, with that deep orange colour you see in photographs. Zagora's desert, near M'Hamid, is largely reg — flat, stony desert — with one modest dune area at Tinfou and the taller Erg Chigaga dunes a further 60 km off-road beyond it.
If your dream is to walk out of your tent straight onto a tall golden dune at sunrise, that is Merzouga. At Zagora you will mostly see flat, rocky desert with scattered dunes.
Getting there
Zagora is closer to Marrakech: about 6 to 7 hours over the Tizi n'Tichka pass and through the Draa Valley. Merzouga is further — about 9 hours from Marrakech or 7 from Fes — which is exactly why it rewards the effort. The drive to Merzouga crosses the Middle Atlas, cedar forests and the Ziz Valley gorge, one of the most varied drives in Morocco.
Zagora suits a two-day trip from Marrakech. Merzouga suits three days or more, ideally with a night in the Dades or Todra gorges on the way.
Camp comfort
Merzouga has developed far more comfort infrastructure because the dunes support a proper camp industry. At our camp that means private tents with AC/heating, ensuite bathrooms with hot showers, real beds and an air-conditioned restaurant. Zagora camps are generally simpler — shared facilities are common, and air conditioning is rare.
In summer this matters enormously: Merzouga afternoons are hot, and an air-conditioned tent is the difference between resting and enduring.
So which should you choose?
- Choose Merzouga for the biggest dunes, the postcard Sahara and comfortable camps with AC/heating and ensuite bathrooms
- Choose Zagora only if you have a single spare night from Marrakech and accept simpler conditions
- If you can, give Merzouga three days: one for the drive, one full day in the dunes, one night at a desert camp
- Whichever you pick, avoid one-night 'desert tours' that spend more time in the van than on the sand
We are obviously not neutral — our family built a camp on the Erg Chebbi dunes because we believe this is the finest desert in Morocco. But if you have the days, come and judge for yourself. The sunset from the big dune behind our camp usually settles the argument.
